Updated: Jan 17

“Every time you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask yourself if you want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future”

negative effect of video games

Why are video games harmful?

Today most of the teenage boys are addicted to video games like freefire, pubg etc, they don't realize but they are spending most important time of their lives in a virtual world which has nothing to offer them, Some stats related to video games, 0.3% to 1% of the general population fit the criteria for a video game addiction diagnosis in the US, UK, Canada, and Germany. South Korea declared video game addiction a public health crisis since more than 600,000 children struggle with it. 8.4% of children and teenagers are addicted to gaming, of which, 11-12% are boys, and 6-7% are girls. According to another set of statistics, young adult males between the ages of 18-24 are at high risk of video game addiction. study produced data that indicated that boys who spend less than 1.5 hours on the television and playing video games, were 75.4% less likely to be overweight than those who spend more than 1.5 hours.

DO YOU PLAY VIDEO GAMES

  • YES

  • NO

Why do boys play video games?

Most of the boys use video games to escape from harsh reality that they are losers in real life, they try to accomplish mission and complete task in video games because it is much easier to get their task done in virtual world as compared to real world, they don't want to level up in real life. Making progress in video games can be correlated to making no progress in real life because of the constant feeling of work done and progress made.

Are video games really bad for you?

Because of video games young boys are unable to develop social skills because they are always glued to screen, they spend their puberty years playing video game rather than going outside and playing sports ,which helps in growth of mind and body. they mess up their sleep schedule which stunts their growth.

Some psychological impact of video game addiction are very scary, A study by Baum et al., (2015) on German-speaking expert gamers revealed that addicted gamers scored higher on depression, social anxiety and low on all dimensions of quality of life. They also reported gamers being less agreeable, thorough, and emotionally less stable and having severe anger, guilt, and envy. Another study by Wittek et al. (2015) revealed that video game addiction was also positively associated with neuroticism (negative or anxious emotional state).

According to the Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide (Joiner, 2005), individuals become capable of withstanding the pain and fear associated with a suicide attempt through habituation to painful and/or frightening stimuli. This capability is referred to as 'acquired capability' and is composed of both pain tolerance and fearlessness about death.

Boys who do well in video games are actually ambitious , but they must use their Hardwork and ambition in real life, to level up in real life. When you'll find your purpose and improve, you will loose interest for video games , trust the process and keep hustling ,

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
